Mass Effect Foundation Vol 1 Trade Review

This trade collects issues #1-4. It's written by Mass Effect 2 & 3 lead writer Mac Walters, illustrated by Tony Parker and Omar Francia. The story follows a Cerberus agent named Rasa but also includes a few of the Mass Effect veteran characters.
It starts with this slave child being used to get to a high level Cerberus agent. What’s so great about it is that it starts as just a good, fun, interesting side story and it isn’t until the end of it that you realize that it’s the origin of the main character, Rasa. From that point forward each story is different past dealings with teammates of Commander Shepard. For example Cerberus Agent Rasa has to protect somebody that Wrex is contracted to kill when he was still just another Krogan mercenary even before the first Mass Effect game takes place. You also get to see flashbacks of Ashley Williams and Kaiden Alenko. The story is a little harder to keep track of as it goes on.
The thing about story is that when it comes to comics it's equally parts written and visual. The art was more unrefined than what were used to seeing in the games. It looks quite similar to most indie books. Most of the characters were easily identifiable throughout the book. The character that was hardest to recognize was Kaiden Alenko. Something that was hard to track was some of the fighting or action scenes. Overall the art was pretty solid with well designed and structured paneling. Seeing Kaiden, Wrex, and Ashley before they were a big deal was awesome too.
After reading this in trade I can honestly say that it reads a little bit better in issues. Some of the action and story was hard to keep track of but overall seeing and reading younger accurate representations of characters that you've come to love is great. If you're a hardcore Mass Effect fan this is a fun, enjoyable, and interesting read. If you're not an ME fan though it's still a solid read but it won't mean neatly as much to you. Personally I preferred reading it in issues.
Verdict: BUY

April 23, 2014 Comic Week in Review

Pablo Gunner uses the little intelligence he has to muster up some written comic book reviews of the titles that he thinks his fellow nerds would want to know about most and the books that didn’t quite make it onto the Comicast.
Avengers Undercover #3
(W) Dennis Hopeless (A) Timothy Green III
2.99
In this issue the “ undercover Avengers” as I'll call them since this group doesn't really have a name even though they're not really undercover. Anyway they find themselves in a toned down version of Arcades Murder World for the rich and famous. This team runs into Arcade and though it seemed like they didn’t really have a plan it couldn't be further from the truth. One of their members just freezes up once she she's Arcade so that does somewhat  put a kink in their plan. So do they go forward with their plan or save their friend? There’s no reason why they can't try to do both. Behind the scenes it appears that Baron Zemo, the leader of the Masters of Evil, is not only allowing this to go on but planned for it. By the end of the issue it appears that these kids have met their goal but not everything is as it appears in Murder World so we'll have to wait and see. There was an artist change on this book. The character designs were not as cartoony and therefore came off as somewhat bland and boring. It wasn't bad and it wasn't a huge change but I didn't like it. For now it's keeping my interest even if it's just to find out how they actually become "Undercover Avengers" as it doesn't appear that they've been deemed with that mission.
Verdict: weak BUY
Iron Patriot #2
(W) Ales Kot (A/CA) Garry Brown
3.99
I'm trying to recall what actually happened in this book as it wasn't all that memorable. Multiple attacks, that appear to terrorist in nature, have cropped up all over the United States. Meanwhile James Rhodes is sinking to the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico in the Iron Patriot armor. Rhodes ejects himself and uses the armor as a missile as a last ditch effort. At the same time it looks like some masked men are invading the house of James Rhodes father. That part was pretty intense. I recall Rhodey being shuffled into a helicopter by similar masked men. They honestly looked like average run of the mill bank robbers with their crappy black ski-masks on. It was all very confusing on the how and why of what was going on but at least this book looks good. The art is absolutely superb. It has a semi-realistic and indie style look to it somewhat like Ghosted but more grounded in reality. I'm really digging the art but the story not so much. I couldn’t care less about “ ron Patriot” but it was hardcore seeing old man Rhodes take on the masked men that invaded his house.
Verdict: STRONG Skim

SINESTRO #1
(W) Cullen Bunn (CA/A) Dale Eaglesham
2.99
I don’t want to say this book was bad but it was very "meh". The art looked astoundingly impressive but beyond looking good this title did very little for me. This starts with Sinestro dressed in just a loin cloth or something on a random savage planet. He kind of just wines about his crappy life, oh woe is me, and junk like that. A tiger like animal attacks him he and he fights it off. Then some weird lady from his past shows up. She's trying to get Sinestro back into the corps, to once again yield the yellow ring. He tells her to screw off but she's rather persistent. Even though she told him of how different things are he doesn’t believe her for a while until he realizes it for himself how different she is. Sinestro goes back to take over the corps from his self appointed successor but neither Arkillo nor his fellow fear lanterns care for that much. Honestly the synapsis doesn't sound bad at all but the execution left much to be desired. I could not have less of a desire to read the second issue. Attractive visuals don't make up for bland writing.
Verdict: weak Skim
