FEBRUARY 6 COMIC WEEK IN REVIEW

We will have some variaty compared to other reviews, but not as many comics. Most of the really good comics were in the Comicast,  but New Avengers was harder to find. It is still worth finding out how good it is.

Hellboy in Hell #3
Writer and Artist: Mike Mignola

Ambassador

The art is weird and different in this series. I hated the art at first int he first book,  but now the art has grown on my. The story is really good and spot on. It is really grea to hear about his orgins more since he is in Hell. It sure os interesting to see if he can find someone to truly trust down there. I wonder if he will be able to come back to earth or not.
Verdict: BUY

Star Wars Dark Times #1 Fire Carrier Part 1 of 5 $2.99
Script: Randy Stradley, Art: Gabriel Guzman

Pablo
The art is rather impressive. I found myself looking for any flaws but I couldn't. It's not unlike anything you've seen before but the semi-
realistic look guts and work surprisingly well like you're watching a live-action show. The book had a good hook as the main characters are in an intense situation from the get-go. This story takes place a little after the Jedi purge and order 66. An alien Jedi is on the run with a pandawan and group of younglings. Their ship gets grounded and they land on a planet in the edge of the galactic ring. They are forced into an overcrowded refugee camp. There is something sinister at hand that is yet to be revealed. The characters, story, and dialogue were well written. There wasn't anything I didn't like in this book. For any Star Wars fan this is a must BUY and for anybody else it's at least a strong SKIM
Verdict: BUY

Star Trek #17

Written by: Mike Johnson & F. Leonard Johnson, M.D., Artist: Claudia Balboni

Pablo
This issue is all about Doctor Leonard McCoy. It's practically his origin story as it shows him as a little boy, med student, young doctor, and more. This series is an ongoing title based off of the most recent movie. The character looks and acts just like the movie. The art could be better but it's not bad. It's decent but nothing noteworthy. Despite the lack of quality in the art the writing and story completely make up for it. It was nice to get to know this character better as he kind of comes off as a d-bag in the movie.
Verdict: STRONG SKIM

Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #13
Writer: James Roberts, Art: Guido Giudi, John Wycough, Juan Castro, Marc Deering

Pablo
I was so excited when I opened this book because the art is so classically retro and I love it. The characters are fun and enjoyable even though I don't know them that well yet. The story is actually really fun. A crew of Autobots visit a planet for some R&R. In doing so they use human holomatter avatars more or less fitting to their personality at first, one of them even looks like Doctor Who #10. After finding out the place is mech friendly they go in a bar. As the issue plays out its pretty much just the guys drinking and shooting the s***. The conversations they have are quite a hoot. It was a really fun and enjoyable ride. The best part about this book was that it made these bots seem so real and relatable. I always just think of them as warring robots but now I think of them as people, military people at least.
Verdict: BUY

Transformers Spotlight Megatron
Story & Art: Nick Roche

Pablo
I could not stop reading this book despite my contempt for Megatron. To understand how a tyrant feels and thinks was quite interesting. The art is intricately detailed and extremely impressive as such. The bots have the retro design with the new detailed and somewhat realistic look. Megatron has been out of commission for 3 years and now he is back, rebuilt, upgraded, and his resolve is stronger than ever. This issue mostly consists of Megatron attacking and chasing down Starscream in an effort to reestablish his reign. It's interesting to see these beaten, broken down Decepticons, be reinvigorated by Megatrons tactics. Megatron looks a little cartoony but that's only because he's shiny and new in comparison to the Starscream he beats the hell out of which looks like scrap metal by the time he's done with him. I probably wouldn't buy a Megatron series but as a one-shot this is perfect.
Verdict: BUY

Transformers: Prime-Rage of the Dinobots #3(of 4)
Writer: Mike Johnson, Artist: Agustin Padilla

Pablo
This starts with Grimlock challenging  a certain female Dinobot. She has reprogrammed one of his comrades and an army at the ready. Outgunned, Grimlock makes a deal deal with her that if she wins him and his men join her and undergo the same programming as their brother in arms but if he wins she has to change him back and let them go. Being an egotistical character that she is she takes the deal. A fight between the two ensues. That's just the beginning but I won't spoil the action packed, fun, enjoyable, easy, quick read this was. I had no idea what was going on going into this book but I was sucked in instantly. Seeing Grimlock fight a losing battle, with everything on the line, fight his primal urges, and see his resolve was extremely intense. The art was very bright, colorful, bursting with life and energy.
Verdict: BUY

G.I. Joe A Real American Hero #187
Writer: Larry Hama, Artist: S L Gallant

Pablo
Art is not bad but its not all that good either. It looks like its trying to do a semi-realistic cartoony style. I find all the code names cheesy and dumb much like the writing and characters themselves. Despite the recap at the beginning I still had no idea what was going on the whole time nor did I care. I won't deny that it is intense from beginning to end as it seems like the end of a story arc or climax of the plot. The action is confusing and muddled for the most part. This book was cheesy, ridiculous, over the top. I didn't care for the characters, story, writing, or art. It was all just too mediocre and generic.
Verdict: PASS

Snake Eyes Storm Shadow #21
Writer: Chuck Dixon, Artist: Atilio Rojo

Pablo
Starts in 1632 with a ninja clad in black against what looks like a clan of samurai. The art looks great but the actions could have been more clear but it got the point across that even though this ninja is BA anybody can be beat. I prefer the art style more than the the 2012 present happenings in this book but its good nonetheless. In the 2012 present happening the ninjas sword is found in ruble and displayed in a gallery. Men clad in yellow and green show up to apprehend the item. Snake Eyes shows up to stop them but a mystery man ends up finishing the job and taking the sword for himself. Later this mystery man and his mentee are attacked by ninjas in black. I honestly don't know what's going on but I am very interested to find out. I appreciated the art style and the story intrigued me.
Verdict: STRONG SKIM

Voltron #10
Writer: Brandon Thomas, Artist: N. Steven Harris

Pablo
Wow, that is what I thought when I opened up this book because the art is extremely well done. The battles could be a little more clear and concise but other than that its pretty damn good. I never thought Voltron could be cool but I was proven wrong as this seems on level with Star Trek and Star Wars. The ship control seems real technical like in Star Trek. The characters and relationships are deep like Star Wars. I probably would have been really confused were it not for the recap page on the first page. Somebody is killing people on a planet ruled by the son of a dead evil tyrant. Voltron shows up to stop them and almost gets the job done. There is a big reveal at the end but I still don't understand the brevity of it. It was still a solid issue despite my ignorance.
Verdict: SKIM

IMAGE
Think Tank #5
Writer: Matt Hawkins, Artist: Rahsan Ekedel

Pablo
This book is about a guy who's a genius science prodigy recruited by the military in high school to make weapons for them. Over time he starts to see them for what they are so he runs away, they find him, and bring him back. Upon return he meets a girl and eventually falls for her. Then they run away together but it turns out she's actually a military agent whose sole mission is to keep tabs on him. As it goes she turns him in and they end back at the military compound. Mind you this is just the backstory that's on the inside of the first page. Just so you know this is in black and white. Reading this after all the colorful Transformers books was not the brightest idea as I did not care much for the black-and-white at first but I quickly warmed up to it as the shading tints and textures were rather impressive. In this issue we see the tension between the guy and the girl the beginning of a new story arc as well as a good introduction to this character as you see a lot of the scientists types and Marvel such as Hank Pam Tony Stark and Reed Richards and yes he is Somewhat similar to them. He is actually a well-written as well as well drawn character. This issue has him creating ethically irresponsible biological weapons For the military as if he's trying to tarnish their name with his machinations. It's almost as if he's saying if you won't let me leave then I'll destroy you by doing exactly what you want me to do which was very interesting to see. I believe this is only the beginning of his horrible experiments and I'm interested to see how plays out.
Verdict: BUY

Marvel
Scarlet #6
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis(BMB), Artist: Alex Maleev

Pablo
I've never read this title before so here's the recap her boyfriend was gunned down by dirty cops she In retaliation she goes and kills those dirty cops. In this issue she and her little gang takes a news station hostage so that she could tell everybody that the cops are corrupt and that she's holding a rally for all the people that agree with her or just to hear what she has to say as well as the people that disagree with her. The writing was well done the story was interesting will really made this what it was is the art. The sketchy dirty unclean raw style  of art fits this title exquisitely. As good as this issue was I was really lost even though I was really interested I would have to say that this series would be a lot better in trade.
Verdict: BUY

Marvel NOW! Thunderbolts #4
Writer: Daniel Way, Artist: Steve Dillon

Pablo
The art is getting better with each issue too bad I'm bored with the story. Much like the characters in this story I'm getting tired of this crap. Ok maybe it's not crap but its mediocre as hell. Ok so Ross is mad at Punisher for shooting the former leader. They all go their separate ways, you learn about somebody you  could care less about, Venom rescues Elektra, and it seems like Ross has lost his mind. I've lost interest and I still don't like Dillons art.

Verdict: PASS

Ambassador
The art and the story were weak in this issue. I really do not like how the punisher is drawn. He is one of the characters I like the most in the team. Somehow Venom and Elecktra get along really well, but we never know why. I felt the writing had a lot of holes in it. The art was not an easy flow to read.
Verdict: PASS 'n DROP

Marvel NOW! New Avengers #3
Writer: Jonathan Hickman, Artist: Steve Epting

Pablo
It starts with the recap and intro pages. After that it delves into the who, what, where, when, and why of the mind gem. I'll be honest at first I didn't get it myself but by the end of the issue it made perfect sense why he belongs with the illuminati. Which if there is any character that didn't fit in it is Captain America and that's made very apparent in this issue in a brilliantly crafted and bold statement. I also thoroughly enjoy this interrogation that Richards is having with their prisoner. In an instant we see this teams only hope and plan smashed to pieces. Despite being supremely surprised at the end it all makes sense. It's also good to see the Illuminati returning to form. Epting is doing a sparklingly well job on art here. I've seen better but this is so damn close not to mention its on time.
Verdict: BUY

Ambassador
This book had really strong writing and art. Some parts were predictable, but needed to get done. I really like the character that replaces Xavier. He really does fit in the team. Captain America was outed in a shocking way.All the characters in this book are relatable and likeable. I even like the prisoner and Richards conversations. I am glad that the solution was not that simple and will be difficult to figure out.
Verdict: BUY

Marvel NOW! The Fearless Defenders #1
Writer: Cullen Bunn, Artist: Will Sliney

Pablo
The art in this book is sharp, sleek, shiny, and sexy. I had no intentions of buying this title but as soon as I saw the art I knew I had to buy it. Lucky for me and everybody that bought this its not just a pretty face, has personality too. Right you are introduced to the leading ladies Valkyrie and Misty Knight. Misty Knight is quickly established as sexy African-American badass bionic PI sporting the 70s look. A group of mercenaries ruin her investigation on a ship in the middle of the big blue. She meets up with the archaeologist she's working for to give her the artifact she commandeered. Upon procurement of the artifact Dr. Annabelle Riggs discovers that its some sort of song box. Unfortunately for them the activated song box brings certain things to light. Valkyrie shows up and with the assistance of Misty Knight takes care of the imminent danger. At one point Valkyrie literally sweeps Dr Riggs off her feet and we find out that Annabelle is interested in women as she lays one of Valkyrie. It was spontaneous, fun, funny, cute, and not at all forced unlike the moment in Young Avengers. The art depreciated later in the book but just barely. The art was stunning, characters were enjoyable, story was fun and got me interested.
Verdict: BUY 'n ADD
