Mighty Captain Marvel #1 $3.99 Writer: Margaret Stohl(@mstohl) Artist: Ramon Rosanas Colorist: Michael Garland(@michaelgarland) This book was not at all what I was expecting. That's not bad, it's just the truth. I was kind of expecting this grand gesture and idea that had been teased from the end of Civil War II. Instead I got something more resembling what was going on in the first half of the second season of Supergirl. Once again, not a bad thing, just not the direction I expected it to go. Now if that's too vague for you I'll explain. Cap'n Marvel is overseeing the making of her new show that is suppose to fund Alpha Flight. She gets a phone call from the POTUS about a special mission in which it appears a rogue Army Ranger is attacking a literal alien refugee camp. She confronts this guy as he puts a Kree kid in a pod. She intercepts the pod and takes it to the Alpha Flight station. The story and dialogue were pretty well done. I just feel there were a couple instances in the art that could have made certain aspects of the story more clear and less confusing. Considering that this is Margaret Stohl's first time writing a comic book she did a superb job. I think her and the artist will get better as this title continues. I'm looking forward to see that progress. Grade: BUY!! Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #3 $3.99 Writer: Kieron Gillen(@kierongillen) Artist: Kev Walker Colors: Antonio Fabela(@AntonioFabela) At the beginning of this book we have Aphra and her old man on Yavin 4 to find an artifact. It takes place after the first Death Star was destroyed so the Imperials are scouring the rebels old base. The Wookiee bounty hunter, Black Krrsantan, serves as a distraction as the homicidal droids, Bee-Tee & Triple-Zero, are sent in undercover to let her and her dad in. They argue and bicker along the way. He acts like an old man and she act like a rebellious youngster. Overall it was a solid book. I'm warming up to the art, that and I think it's improving. It looked really impressive in this issue. There was one emotional outburst that Aphra had towards her dad that felt odd to me. I also felt there was some visual explanation that was missing at the end. Those were the only issues I could really find. Grade: BUY!! Black Panther: World of Wakanda #3 $3.99 Writer: Roxane Gay(@rgay) Penciler: Alitha E. Martinez(@Ariotstorm) Inker: Roberto Poggi(@RobbyTaneda) Colorist: Rachelle Rosenberg(@rachellecheri) I'm not really sure why I'm reading this anymore. This book is primarily focused on the relationship between two of the women of Dora Milaje, Ayo & Aneka. Maybe it is the pleasure of seeing their love grow. Or perhaps I'm waiting for this story to catch up with the Black Panther book. In this issue the leader of the Dora Milaje announces that they will no longer blindly follow after the events of the previous issue. Ayo & Aneka take some time away together. There is also a betrayal amongst the ranks. At the end the two lovers are called back to action. My only issue with this book is that the story is not current. The artwork is amazing and the writing is wonderful so no complaints on that end. Grade: BUY!! Avengers #3.1 $3.99 Writer: Mark Waid(@MarkWaid) Penciller: Barry Kitson Inkers: Mark Farmer with Rafael Fonteriz & Barry Kitson Colorists: Jordan Boyd(@jordantboyd) & Wil Quintana I'm not sure why this book exists but I sure am glad that it does. There must be a market for the old school team of Avengers that is Cap, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver. At the end of the last issue there was a new member added to the team, Cressida. She has the ability to amplify others powers but at a cost. In this the Avengers go up against the Thinker and his miniature "awesome androids." Aside from Cressida's dark secret of how she gets her power she also starts to manipulate the team. The art and writing are absolutely perfect for this old school theme and tone. I could not be enjoying it more. If you miss the retro this is definitely for you but even if you're not it's worth checking out. Grade: STRONG BUY!!! Invincible Iron Man #3 $3.99 Writer: Brian Michael Bendis(@BRIANMBENDIS) Artist: Stefano Caselli Colorist: Marte Gracia(@RGBSEXONPSDS) Last I saw Riri she still had her own bulky War Machine-esque style armor. In this she has Tony's latest armor retrofitted for herself. There was no grandiose reveal or anything like that which I believe was a huge mistake. All the while she's trying to come up with her own name alongside her Tony Stark AI. That they gloss over too. What they don't gloss over is her and Rescue aka Pepper Potts meeting as well as the revelation that Stark's biological mother is now the new owner of the company. As always it was great seeing MJ, Friday, and Pepper though I'm not really sure why she was suited up as Rescue. Maybe we'll find out next issue which I will surely be getting despite the qualms I had with this one. Stefano's art is stellar, dialogue is witty, and everything that transpires is interesting. Grade: BUY!!
Uncanny Inhumans #18 $3.99
Writer: Charles Soule(@CharlesSoule)
Artist: Kim Jacinto(@kimjacinto23)
Colorist: Java Tartaglia
I
love it when a great story comes together. This story starts off about
Maximus the Mad, whom I hate, and what seems to be a couple useless
Inhumans, that he broke out of prison. One of them can access any of the
memories of his ancestors and the other can't use his power(s) unless
he ingests Terrigen crystal. Maximus find a way to utilize both of their
abilities to do what he does best, cause chaos. In this case he uses it
to possibly help the Inhumans and X-Men. That's not really his style
though so we'll have to see how this plays out. This issue has huge
revelations and possible ramifications. I'm pretty jacked off to see
what comes of this. It's looks amazing. There's lots of subtle and
intense menacing expressions. It had a brilliant build and progression
to it. It's a great jumping on point for any reader that doesn't know
much about Inhumans, Maximus, what's been going on within recent years,
and the IvX event. In other words excellent exposition.
Grade: STRONG BUY!!!
Captain America: Sam Wilson #18 $3.99
Writer: Nick Spencer(@nickspencer)
Artist: Daniel Acuña(@LagartoMurciano)
To
me this is how comics should be. It tackles political and social issues
while pointing out that this is a comic book with superheroes and all.
This issue stems from the direct fallout of the last issue and others.
Rage is in jail because the Americops found him in a broken into pawn
shop. Cap Wilson gets the truth from Rage and tries to hook him up with a
super lawyer. Rage denies the help so he can show the flaws of the
system. Sam decides to help in another way by using birds to see what
happened. He struggles to decide to release the footage to the public.
He talks to his crew and Steve. It brings up an important dilemma:
should evidence be released to the public or just the court of law. The
art is dark, gritty, and semi realistic. It's Daniel Acuña so you ought
to know it's on point.
Grade: STRONG BUY!!!
Trinity #5 $2.99 Script, Art, & Cover: Francis Manapul(@FrancisManapul) As revealed at the end of the previous issue Mongol is the orchestrator of this dreamscape that Clark, Bruce, and Diana are stuck in. Poison Ivy does play a part though as one of her plants is the key. They also share a child. It's kind of confusing. I hope the next issue clarifies it a little bit more. Visually it's stunning and leaves you awestruck so no complaints there. Grade: BUY!! Nightwing #13 $2.99 Writer: Tim Seeley(@HackinTimSeeley) Artist: Marcus To(@marcusto) Colors: Chris Sotomayor(@SotoColor) First off the art is gorgeous. Second I know this book isn't for everyone because it's a slow build but it's definitely for me. Personally I was a little confused at first. It plays a little too heavily on the fact that you have recently read the previous issue. After that speed bump it didn't take long to suck me back into the story. This group of ex-villains Dick has been running with and helping out decide to sit out saving the mayor. There's a little headway made from the detective working these casing that implicate one of the members of the group. Dick shows up right when some imposter tries to take out the mayor of Blüdgaven. Nightwing unmasks him and one of his friends helps with the situation. Unfortunately that helper seems to have set him up too. I'm pretty jacked off to see what happens next. It was great to get the reveal of the villain. The action sequences are superb, facial expressions are phenomenal. There's definitely more to this book than just Dick, you just need to look a little bit more closely. Grade: STRONG BUY!!! Aquaman #15 $2.99 Writer: Dan Abnett Artist: Philippe Briones(@PhilippeBriones) Inker: Wayne Faucher Colors: Gabe Eltaeb(@GabeEltaeb) At first I was blown away by the art but as I read more I noticed the imperfections. I won't deny the insane amount of detail in the throw down between the King Fisher, his crew, and Aquaman. The fury Arthur exudes is intense. The battle is chaotic. I thoroughly enjoyed Arthur's narration throughout the battle. It was pure magnificent. The way he talks to the president was fantastic as well. Something I caught right away though was that Aquaman and Superman both had the same big awkward looking schnoz. For the most part the art was impressive but there were some minor shortcomings. Overall the story was superb. It has an incredible conclusion to the 15 issue story arc. Grade: BUY!! Green Arrow #15 $2.99 Writer: Benjamin Percy(@Benjamin_Percy) Artist: Juan Ferreyra(@juaneferreyra) For this title there are a revolving couple of artists. This time around we get Juan Ferreyra. His art is pretty solid overall. For the most part it's pretty outstanding but sometimes there's images here and there that look weird, off, and rub me the wrong way. It's few and far between but they stick out like a sore thumb. There's minor points in the story that irk me too. Overall it's really great but then they'll have Ollie in a position when the villain could and should have just killed him just for them to stall. It's really irritating because it seems like an aspect that has been in each issue. The story is essentially about these cops that went bad so they invade the prison to kill the inmates. Of course Arrow and crew show up to fight them as they escape. There's an awesome cliffhanger ending that I did not see coming since I haven't seen the character in a few issues. I liked it. It was pretty good. Since there's minor problems with both the writing and art I can't give it too high praise. Grade: weak BUY ! BATMAN #15 $2.99 Writer: Tom King(@TomKingTK) Artist: Mitch Gerads(@MitchGerads) This book is absolutely mind blowing. The two contrasting art styles are astounding and magnificent. One is very old school BATMAN 66 style and the other is in the fashion of BATMAN Year One, dark, grim, and gritty. It starts with BATMAN and Catwoman each telling their side of the story how they first met. It's brilliantly well done. Cat ends up escaping Bat. Once again they continue the eternal game of cat and mouse. Going on the path of the only clue Bats has he also ends up solving the case that clears Selina's name. Somehow this book perfect captures romance, horror, detective, and crime drama all in one by the retelling of two past drastically different tales, and the current one. I can't praise this book enough. Grade: STRONG BUY!!! BBOW!!!!
Superman #15 $2.99
Story: Peter J. Tomasi(@PeterJTomasi), Patrick Gleason(@patrick_gleason)
Artists: Ryan Sook, Ed Benes(@EdBenes_), Clay Mann(@Clay_Mann_), Jorge Jimenez(@JorgeJimenezArt)
Quite
a cavalcade of artists we have here. For good reason though as as
Superman and the Order of Worlds skip around to multiple Earths to get
all of the Supermen and Superwomen together since somebody is hunting
them down and taking their power. They decide their chances are better
together. The different styles work, fit, and look right. Some are
better than other but it's all in the eye of the beholder. Regardless
it's offers a nice variety. There's some amazing paneling at the
beginning and a stunning Aquamwoman. This was a solid build up to the
climax.

Aquaman #14
Writer: Dan Abnett
Artist: Philippe Briones
Colorist: Gabe Eltaeb
As the cover indicates the Aquamarines commence their op to take out the leader of Atlantis for their attacks on US soil despite some evidence somebody else is pulling the strings unfortunately there's no witnesses to corroborate that since the organization, NEMO, covers their tracks well. Now that I've covered everything up to this point with a run on sentence we can move onto what this book entails. The art is amazing. There's so much emotion in the eyes and faces of characters. Lots of intense eyes and gasping mouths. The fantastic colors are rich and exquisitely done. As I said, the Aquamarines attack, in doing so they kill and injure members of Arthur's cabinet. One of which whose last words were about him losing faith in Arthur as king. This motivates Aquaman to tell the Atlantean people that if he cannot resolve this issue soon he will step down. Luckily he has found a way to track his enemy. It ends with an eclectic cliffhanger that had me reeling and wanting for more.

Flash #13 $2.99 Writer: Joshua Williamson(@Williamson_Josh) Artist: Neil Googe(@neilgooge) Colorist: Ivan Plascencia(@ivanplascencia) Usually I'm disappointed with artist changes but not this time as it fit and worked wonderfully. This was kind of a one-shot/filler issue but it felt like a much needed break and focus n other things. Iris and Barry go on their first official date and Wally does his best to keep the city safe so they won't be distracted to their jobs. The colors and overall look keep a consistent look and visual style. Wally faces off against Tar Pit, which is like Clayface but tar, and then ends up helping him. In the end it didn't really feel like filler at all. It develops Wally as a hero as well as Barry's personal life. It fits perfectly as part of the series and well on its own. Grade: STRONG BUY!!! Monstress #9 $3.99 Writer: Marjorie Liu(@marlorienliu) Artist: Sana Takeda There's so much going on in this title yet so little issue to issue it's hard to judge each one individually. This issue focuses on different aspects of Maika's mother, Moriko, in the past. One is very colorful and bright. The other was quite dark but both were grim. Maika has a memory of Moriko training her how to survive in a way that is disagreeable even to her Tiger pirate friend, Seizi. This is an issue in which it really has Maiki look within to contemplate as to whether her mother actually cared about her. Maika struggles to survive against two spies on the ship. She is cast away to an ominous and nefarious island. This book is so rich is culture, history, and character. It's definitely not the some of its parts, it's much more. The art is always gorgeous and stunning, impossibly so. It's very interesting but a small part of a large and expansive ever growing story. I suggest reading it in trade. Grade: STRONG BUY!!! Star Wars #26 $3.99 Writer: Jason Aaron(@jasonaaron) Artist: Salvador Larroca(@SalvadorLarroca) Colorist: Edgar Delgado(@delgaduck) This picks up with this elite stormtroopers, Scar Squadron, "interrogating" 3PO. Vader orders them to get rid of him. Against his orders they decide to try to trick the rebels to rescue their friend. Of course they see through this but R2 refuses to give up on his companion. He shuts down Luke's X-Wing. This forces Luke to catch up on a reading from the journal of Ben Kenobi. It tells the beginning of a story about Yoda. At first he recruits a captured force user boy from a band of pirates. He meets with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan to take the boy to Corusant. He decides to follow the force to a planet where he felt a disturbance. It's obvious this may be a two or three is arc. I'm looking forward to reading more even though this didn't provide much. Other than the spectacular visuals this is a slow moving story that left me wanting more. This was a tease in so many ways. There was a couple neat moments but few and far between. The most appealing thing about this book is Larroca's art as this might be the best work I've ever seen from him. A big part though are the depth and magnitude of the colors. Artistically this is by far one of the best books this week. If I were you I'd wait until the next issue comes out to read them together. Grade: BUY!! Uncanny Inhumans #17 $3.99 Writer: Charles Soule(@CharlesSoule) Penciler: R.B. Silva(@RB_Silva) Inker: Adriano Di Benedetto(@Adr_Ben Colorists: Java Tartaglia & Andrew Crossley(@CrossleyColor) This issue is not what I expected or wanted out of it. That is both a good and bad thing. For one it's good that it's not what I expected because that would have made it predictable but at the same time I think it would have been a lot cooler. I thought the newly created and assorted Auran was going to attack Black Bolt with the power she stole from him. That would have been awesome but like Bolt explains that would result in the destruction of the city and death of millions. Like I said, that would have been awesome. Instead Black Bolt with the help of Auran's daughters, Flagman, and Sterilon, they contain and fix her. To me it was disappointing that it seemed to easily and quickly resolved. At the same time it was incredible seeing how well the forming king took charge and handled this. I think if the stakes were higher by having Auran destroy the Quiet Room and potentially more before it got resolved to would have been better. Black Bolt deserved to be taken down a notch for killing Auran in the first place and other past transgressions so it was unfortunate I didn't get to see that in this. Everything looks on point in this book. The colors, pencils, and inks were top notch. I enjoyed and appreciated the detail in the facial expressions. I just felt this arc could have been more therefore I can't give it a STRONG BUY. Grade: BUY!! Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #10 $3.99 Writer: Kyle Higgins(@KyleDHiggins) Artist: Jonathan Lam(@JonLamArt) Colorist: Joana LaFuente Unfortunately this doesn't pick up where it left but it's been so intense lately I don't mind the much needed reprieve. This issue focuses on Billy, the Blue Power Ranger. At the beginning the Power Rangers are fighting a scary insect monster. Billy hesitates to deliver the final blow. Throughout the book he questions his abilities, whether he is worthy to be Ranger, and considered to be a hero. It seems like he shelved some of his doubts as he comes through in other ways by using his intellect. It says to be continued so I believe this will be a at least part of a two issue arc. This will give Billy the chance to prove himself but I'm ready to get back to the main story. Either way it will be superb as this was. It's surprising how consistently well done the art is. It's brighter than the previous issue though which was fitting and made it clear that this is a past story. Overall I was impressed and enjoyed it. Grade: BUY!! Hal Jordan & The Green Lantern Corps #11 $2.99 Writer: Robert Venditti(@robertvenditti) Penciller: Rafa Sandoval(@RafaSandovalJr) Inker: Jordi Tarragona Colorist: Tomeu Morey(@tomeu_morey) Hal Jordan is greeted by Kyle Rayner who brought him back from Emerald Space. The GLC discovers their true captor is Lar Fleeze. As Sun Tzu says, know your enemy and you can defeat them, so that's exactly what they do. All the while Hal, along with Kyle, and the exiled guardians, Sayd and Ganthet, search for the Green Lanterns who are now missing again. Colors are a substantial factor of a lantern series. This does not disappoint in that sense. I will say the story was pretty predictable. It was still enjoyable though. The most impressive element of this book was the art. The character were all accurate. As good as this was I'm more excited to read the next one. Grade: BUY!! Detective Comics #947 $2.99 Writer: James Tynion IV(@JamesTheFourth) Penciller: Alvaro Martinez Inks: Raul Fernandez Colors: Brad Anderson(@bdanderson13) Even though I had a strong suspicion that Stephanie Brown was going to turn on Batman I didn't expect it to go down the way it did. She legitimately took down the whole team. That may seem like a spoiler in its own right but it's how and why she does it that really makes the difference. She's not wrong but she's not right. This book had everything and more to conclude the Victim Syndicate and tease something else that has been eluded to. It was the perfect endcap to a story that focused on loss and consequences of there being Batman. I will say that the one thing this arc lacked was a true long and lasting effect. Spoiler threatens to do something in this issue that I really wish she would have followed through with. As far as the art goes it was absolutely stellar. They make Spoiler look so dark and ominous in this issue which is exactly how it should be. The visuals brought a certain level of emotional intensity that was much needed. The expression of Cass and Bruce were the my personal faves. Grade: STRONG BUY!!! Action Comics #970 $2.99 Writer: Dan Jurgens(@thedanjurgens) Art: Pat Zircher(@PatrickZircher) Colorist: Ulises Arreola(@Kumori_Kraken) Superman travels to some inconsequential planet where Lex is being held prisoner, awaiting trial for his future crimes as the successor to Darkseid. Once Superman discovers that Luther had a mother box he majes up his mind that Lex is guilty despite the fact that he openly explains thats how he escaped Apocalypse previously. This issue fell flat for me. I found the characters to be stoic and stiff, lacking emotion. The action and colors were quite powerful though. This book reaffirms my belief that Lois is a now a crappy mother. At least Clark has the excuse of being a bad dad because he's busy as Superman. Overall I didn't care for this one. Grade: STRONG Skim
