Manifest Destiny Volume 1 Flora & Fauna Review

MANIFEST
DESTINY
VOLUME 1  FLORA & FAUNA
CHRIS DINGESS -WRITER
MATTHEW ROBERTS-PENCILER & INKER
OWEN GIENI-COLORIST

If you like history mixed with science fiction, horror, and fantasy you'll probably enjoy this book. It is about The Lewis and Clark Expedition. Producer and writer, Chris Dingess, created this series with illustrator, Matthew Roberts, and colorist, Owen Gieni. It is an interesting, unique, crazy take on the Corps of Discover Expedition as it is also known.
The story starts with the narrative of Lewis Meriweather journaling. It continues throughout the story and makes it quite believable it could be the actual historic journal of Lewis, for the most part. I say for the most part because that's when the interesting, unique, crazy stuff comes into play. It's not long into the book that the crew of soldiers and criminals come upon a giant arch made of vegetation. Immediately after the crew is attacked by what I can only describe as a monstrous Buffaloe-man centaur. It's terrifying. I enjoy how Lewis is written as this nerdy scientist type whereas Clark is depicted as a hardened relentless military officer. Clark is stern with his men and cruel to the other crew members. He even lashed them to discipline them. The man has some serious demons which are only slightly revealed in this volume. This team works well as the brain and brawn as they go up against a tribe of Buffaloe(cent)taurs(?) and viral vegetation that turns out to be much more. Somehow they incorporate that and even zombielike beings and creatures and still make it work. It is once they reach La Charrette that they encounter all of this. The best was when they revealed Sacagawea and what she's capable off. It reminded me of anime because the female was the most badass character. I also really enjoyed how they incorporated the mission of the Corps of Discover Expedition: explore the western territory of the US, establish contact, peace, and trade with natives, and clear the way for peaceful settlement.
The art fits the style very well. It has a West Frontier kind of look to it. The pencils are semi-realistic, inks are thin, the colors are bright yet natural. The color palette is constantly changing , almost every page, keeping it fresh, lively, and never boring. The inks are fluid, never appearing motionless. Each panel looks like people caught in between and during moments. The art makes it feel so real despite how ridiculous it gets. The buffalotaurs were absolutely horrifying due to the detail and realism brought to them. The environments and landscapes were so lush and bountiful. The art does a fantastic job of balancing the beauty of the land with the hideous creatures.
Overall this was an enjoyable book. The art is impressive, the writing is solid, dialogue is good, but the story left something to be desired. I'm not sure if it was because it was a little too over the top or because it's just the beginning of this series, story, and expedition. I would like to see more Sacagawea being a badass which was probably one of the more believable aspects of this book. I feel like this series has potential to be great but right now it's only good. It's hard to say if I am willing to throw down fifteen bucks for volume 2. What's a nice incentive for getting into a new series like this is that Image always sells the first volume for ten dollars so it's never too much of a financial burden to try something new. I don't think this book will be for everybody but it might be for you so give a Skim. Personally I give it a STRONG Skim because this is definitely a book that requires strong consideration as both the art and writing are quite enjoyable to the point that skimming this will likely persuade you one way or another whether it will be worth the $10 or not.
Verdict: STRONG Skim

Wonder Woman Volume 4 War Review

Wonder Woman Volume 4 War
Brian Azzarello Writer
Cliff Chiang, Goran Sudzuka, Tony Akins, Dan Green Artists
Matthew Wilson Colorist

I fully comprehend how and why Wonder Woman is now the God of War. Sorry to say but this is one of those books you need to read from the beginning or it's just not worth the pay off. This arc has been going on since issue one or volume one if you read it in trade. In this volume we have Wonder Woman continuing to protect Zeus' youngest son with the aid of her friends and family while trying to prevent his first born from fulfilling a prophesy. There are multiple artists illustrating this book. Despite some minor inconsistencies they are easy to overlook. Each artist delivers such stunning, magnificent images dripping with beautiful, awe-inspiring art. The conclusion to this trade has been a long time coming. Now thinking about it, this had to be something Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang planned from the beginning of their run. It was crafted so graciously and brilliantly.
That grace and brilliance shines brightly with the art. The artists are so strong at telling the story through, images, colors, gesture, and facial expression that it does not require unnecessary dialogue or narrative. Each wind, furrow of the brow, glare, smirk, glance, and pursing of the lips speaks droves. There's so much power and brevity in every single panel, page, and spread. There are some minor inconsistencies amongst the different artists but they are easy to miss and overlook. Things get pretty hairy and intense but there is not one moment that Diana does not look like the graceful, warrior, goddess she is.
From the get-go Wonder Woman and her allies, Zola, Hera, Orion, and the stone guy, are on the run, seeking refuge, trying to muster up a plan to keep Zeus' infant son safe. The ruler of Olympus, Apollo, sends an agent of the sky to get her revenge. Poseidon makes a deal with Zeus' First Born. Wonder Woman and her allies finally meet and battle the infamous, feared, mighty, exiled First Born son of Zeus and Hera. It doesn't go well. You get to see a welcome change of scenery with New Genesis, where Orion is from. It ends with an epic, all-out, glorious, visceral, savage, battle and brawl of the ages. The big moment at the end is subtlety hinted at in the story. It creeps up on you and BAM! It's like a street fight with a prizefighter, you never saw it coming because you didn't expect it and it was lightning quick. Hours later you're still asking yourself, wtf happened. You think, is there any way this could have been avoided. Looking and reading it over and over again you realize, nope, there was no other way.
The conclusion changes the landscape of Olympus, outlook of Wonder Woman, and effects the future of DC comics for years to come. It is more than worth buying and owning each previous volume to get the full affect and heft of this plot. The supremely crafted story is pure brilliance. The art is a beautiful tapestry of magnificence. The Gods of Olympus have their Game of Thrones-esque politics rife with treachery, backstabbing, lies, and drama. I could not stop flipping through the pages and rereading this book. You'll feel the need and want to do so too if you pick this up. I for one can't wait to read the next volume. Wonder Woman Volume 4 War is a STRONG BUY!
Verdict: STRONG BUY

Saga Volume 5 Review

Writer
Brian K. Vaughan
Artist
Fiona Staples

Saga is one of the very few books in which if I see a new volume on the shelf all I need to know is that I have just enough money in the bank to get it. That may sound financially irresponsible but that's how good this series, from writer, Brian K. Vaughan, and artist, Fiona Staples, is. They are a powerhouse creative team that deliver their A game every time. This book is bursting at the seams with brilliance, beauty, magnificence, intellect, heart, character, and love. You can tell this truly is a labour of love for these two. For those of you that are not caught up I'll give you a quick recap. Two star-crossed lovers from warring factions have a baby. Their governments find out and send people to kill them and their child. And they have been on the run ever since. That's about all you need to know to jump into this book.
In this volume it picks up an unspecific time after the last volume or issue 24 if that's how you were reading it before you realized it's much better to read in trade. At first it opens with a beautiful and brilliant narrative about war. Not long after, it is revealed that Alana and her mother-in-law are being help prisoner by a robot who has kidnapped Prince Robot IV's son and is also holding Marko and Alana's baby captive as well. As for Marko he's stuck on a ship with Prince Robot IV, an adorable humanoid seal pup, and a shrubbery looking lady who betrayed his family, all to help the Prince get his son back. The captor of babies allies himself with some rebels. Lets just say it doesn't turn out well for anybody. On Marko's part he ends up in a drug induced vision quest. That puts IV in a bind that leads to them being in an even tighter spot than they already were. This may not sound that exciting or intense but I am keeping it vague since I refuse to spoil any of the book because it's just that good. Trust me, any time you mix family, war, and betrayal there's always drama and excitement. To say the least there's not a dull moment.
With Brian K. Vaughan's intriguing dialogue even when there's a no action it's always moving the story forward without losing momentum. Almost every single word sounds like its coming from a real person. The story is so deep and intricate at times yet plain and simple at others in a way that just works, it is masterfully woven. You find the characters going down a path that they foreshadowed earlier to end in a way you would not have thought imaginable. In another part of the story you have no idea the path it is going for it to end up exactly where you were hoping it would. Every character is so lively and real even if they are some unimaginable freakish looking alien.
Without Fiona Staples this book would not be what it is. All those freakish looking aliens, whether they be mer-people, spider-folk, an adorable seal with legs in yellow fisherman overalls, shrub lady, giant dragon salamander or the environments. A cold, desolate, lifeless planet, and lush, colorful worlds are made real through her expert pencils, inks, and colors. She truly brings every character, world, environment, planet, ship, place, object, creature, person, concept, and idea to life with every subtle expression, gust of wind, ignition of an explosion, and burst of energy. Every single glance, smirk, shrug, landscape, and view, is worth a thousand words and then some. I can't speak any more highly of this artist and her art.
I can't speak more highly of this book either but I'll do my best. If there was any book I wish I came up with it would be this one. I absolutely adore space adventures. I'm a real sucker for a real, true, love story. The kind of love you literally fight tooth and nail for. The kind that makes you a better person. What it's like to have a kid, and during wartime no less. How destructive war can be, to people, worlds, planets, lives, everything, to every one, every where. I am in love with these characters, their world, and this book. I don't say that about too many books. This isn't a book I'm trying to promote, sell more copies of, or even to get you to spend money with one of our sponsors. It's not a book you should read, have to read, or even need to read. This is a series I am in love with and I know you would fall in love with it too. I would be willing to share it with anyone so feel free to ask if you know me. Of course this graphic novel is a STRONG BUY for me as it should be for anyone else. If you read this series you should also share it. If you don't you should borrow it from someone that does. I assure you you'll either want to buy your own or keep theirs. It's a win-win.
Verdict: STRONG BUY
