Nov 27 Comic Week in Review

Every week Pablo Gunner uses the little intelligence he has to muster up some written comic book reviews of the titles that he thinks his fellow nerds would want to know about most and the books that didn’t quite make it onto the Comicast. Enjoy these reviews of DEADPOOL ANNUAL #1, PRETTY DEADLY #2, DAMIAN SON OF BATMAN #2, ABE SAPIEN #1.

Dark Horse Comics
1 FOR $1 ABE SAPIEN #1
(W) Mike Mignola, Scott Allie (A) Sebastian Fiumara (CA) Mike Mignola, Dave Stewart
Right away I was excited to see that the artist was not Mike Mignola. As good of a writer as he is I can’t stand his art style. That being said I thoroughly enjoyed the art in this. It was dark, gritty, detailed, surprisingly colorful and realistic. Instantly it's set up that Hellboy is dead, there's hell on Earth, and Abe Sapien is on the run from the BPRD. Besides that I was kind of confused. I feel that if I hadn't seen the Hellboy movie back in 2004 I really would have been lost. Without that backdrop of knowledge of the Hellboy world and characters I feel like I would have been very lost. It was also disappointing to not see or have Abe speaking until the last few pages of the book . I won't deny that it built anticipation but for a number one issue it didn't do it for me. If I don't know and care about any of the characters by the end of the first issue it failed as a number one of a title for me. I have no doubt the trade is pretty solid but based off this, no matter how much I appreciated the art, it isn't enough for me to care to pick up the issues after this one.
Verdict: SKIM

DC Comics
DAMIAN SON OF BATMAN #2 (OF 4) $3.99
(W/A/CA) Andy Kubert
So this is the issue in which everything starts making sense, almost everything. This picks up exactly where the last issue ended. Supposedly Batman was dead but then Bruce Wayne shows up. He’s there to kick Damian’s and set him straight. In the process of this skirmish Damian shoots his father with a grappling hook gun. The dots are finally connected as to where this story stands, who Batman was, and where Bruce Wayne is. What it doesn’t explain is how Damian is still a shithead after being trained and mentored by both Dick and Bruce approximately ten years down the road. If you haven’t gotten it yet this limited series is essentially a “what if?” title or elseworld story as they are known in the DC universe. A lot of the same issues with the first issue are consistent with this one like its cheesy 90s style writing and art. This one does improve with the interesting revelations as well as a little character development on Damian’s part but I still don’t care enough to keep reading this mediocre book. As a stand alone it’s not bad but I’ve never been very good at separating “elseworld” stories from regular continuity so this type of thing mostly just annoys me since I’m so anal about continuity.
Verdict: SKIM

Image Comics
PRETTY DEADLY #2 $3.50
(W) Kelly Sue DeConnick (A) Emma Rios, Jordie Bellaire (CA) Emma Rios
I've read the first two issues of this title and I'm still not sure what's going on and I can't help but feel like it's somehow my own fault. What am I not getting? I'm not sure but dammit this book looks astonishing. The cover alone is a stunning, detailed, wrap around, spread. There's so many beautiful, gruesome, explicit, gorgeous, and excruciatingly detailed images, panels, pages, and spreads. This is definitely one of those books that requires and warrants multiple read throughs. I felt like with every time I reread it I noticed and picked up more. Much like East of West I don't think that where the book and it's characters are going will be clear until father down the road so I must also suggest that this title would be better in trade. The best way I can explain it right now is to say that it reminds me of a Western mixed with an anime. There's no doubt that this title is worth checking out but as for me I'll be waiting until the first trade comes out.
Verdict: STRONG SKIM

Marvel Comics
DEADPOOL ANNUAL #1 $4.99
(W) Ben Blacker, Ben Acker (A) Evan Shaner (CA) Tradd Moore
This one was weird. You come to expect weird from DP but this issue was just odd. First of all it's set sometime before Secret Invasion so in other words before he was popular. From there it has him about to shoot Matt Murdock aka Daredevil. Some weirdo called Madcap shows up, distracts Deadpool, and long story short becomes a pile of ash. I like that Marvel is explaining how and why Deadpool talks to himself and/or has another voice on his head. Prior to Marvel NOW! the voice(s) in his head were part of him going crazy or being schizophrenic because of all the experiments, brainwashing, and torture Wade Wilson endured during his time with Department H. Most writers had difficulty writing a character with different voices in his head so I prefer the Marvel NOW! direction they took with the title but this issue literally seemed like all it did was explain why Deadpool hears another voice in his head. It was a little sad but it was probably creepier than anything. The writing and art were pretty solid the idea just felt like a waste of time and money.
Verdict: SKIM

Invincible Ultimate Collection Vol. 2 Review

Unlike the first Volume where there was a lot of build up, a shocking event happened, and then it ended this one was the fall out of that traumatic occurrence and a lot of set up for the future. I won't deny that most of the book is pretty slow but despite that fact it's some of the best writing I've experienced. That's something that Robert Kirkman has always been known for because he's so damn good at it. As good as the writing is though the book wouldn't be what it is without Ryan Ottley on art and Bill Crabtree coloring. The colors usually aren't one of the best things about a comic but it is in this book. Ottley's art captures a range of emotions in his art but most of all I remember the beauty and brutality drawn in this series. Even though this title may be the epitome of the superhero genre it has some of the most realistic and emotional moments I've ever read in comics.
Long story short at the end of Volume 1 the main characters' father, Omni-Man, revealed himself as a traitor, beat the shit out of his son, Mark Grayson aka Invincible, and then disappeared. Marks dad is of an alien race of super warriors whose sole purpose is to find planets to conquer kind of like the Saiyans. Marks mother is the most distraught after hearing her husband confess to this and loving her only as a ruse. Mark tries to fill the void that his father left as the premiere protector of the earth, goes to college, and has to deal with relationship problems on top of it all. His mom gets empty nest syndrome as most mothers do when there kids leave the roost. I couldn't help but think of my mom and how she feels when we don't visit her every week. That's what I mean by the realistic and emotional aspect of this book. There's also this very comedic side of the book too. At one point they have a part about Allen the alien. He's this reddish, pink, one-eyed alien that had a tussle with Invincible but now they're cool. Anyways it was very different, funny, interesting, and moved other parts of the story along, the otherworldly part. Something Kirkman has always been the best at is getting you to really like or love a character before something really horrible happens to them and he does not fail to deliver in that aspect in this book at all. Towards the end of this book they also feature some of the side characters by showing you their secret origin stories. Some were, dark, sad, funny, and uplifting.
I feel weird reviewing this book because nothing big really happened in it but at the same time that's one of the things that makes it so great. It's the early Peter Parker/Spider-Man aspect where the best and most interesting stuff is actually about the characters real life and how being a superhero complicates life rather than the other way around. I can't wait to pick up and read Volume 3 because the anticipation of seeing Invincible's first official arch-nemesis as well as all the other plot threads will come to fruition. You can't build a good house unless you have a strong foundation and that exactly what this book is all about. This book isn't without its heroic and epic moments but that's not the main focus of the book. All I know is that the wait will be more than worth it. Kirkman writes a book that you wish you came up with but never could do it as good since he is hands down one of the greatest comic book writers of all time. Ottley and Crabtree bring the visuals to a level that is rarely seen in the superhero genre with both quality and graphic images that you will never forget. If you like superhero comics and you're not reading this you're a fool because you will for sure fall in love with it especially considering all the homages and references to superhero comics and classic comic book tropes.
Verdict: STRONG BUY

Nov 20 Comic Week in Review

Every week Pablo Gunner uses the little intelligence he has to muster up some written comic book reviews of the titles that he thinks his fellow nerds would want to know about most and the books that didn’t quite make it onto the Comicast. This week he reviewed VERTIGO ESSENTIALS FABLES #1, SECRET AVENGERS #11 INF, AVENGERS AI #6AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE #2.

ARCHIE COMIC PUBLICATIONS
AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE #2 $3.99
(W) Roberto Aguirre Sacasa (A) Francesco Francavilla, Jack Morelli (CA) Francesco Francavilla
First of all I want to start off by saying that I thought that the first issue was overrated. A lot of different sources like IGN and iFanboy were singing its high praises. There’s no doubt that the art wasn’t overrated as Francesco Francavilla is one of the most talented artists in the biz. Somehow it seemed that he improved in this issue as did everything else. One of the things that the first issue failed to do for me was establish each character, their different personalities, and empathy for them and all of that was corrected in this one. The way the story was represented was different as well. The narrative was different too. Whereas the story in issue one was linear this one was not. It had a prologue and interlude. The narrative changed from past tense to present in a story telling fashion that wasn’t overbearing in the least. The story also picked up fairly quickly in fact everything came together rather speedily yet didn’t seem at all rushed. Maybe I’m getting a little ahead of myself here since I failed to mention that the premise of this story is that there is a zombie apocalypse starting with the setting of the Archie comics. I have never read or watched anything Archie related so I really had no idea what was fully going on until this issue. Jugghead was the first one to get bit in the first issue so in this one he shows up to the high school Halloween dance as a zombie and starts chomping on the first girl he sees. It gets really dark and sad. I’m excited to see what happens on the next issue as at the end its teased that where they end holed up one of them has been bit unbeknownst to the rest of them. Francavilla is the perfect artist for this book. I love his art. It’s dark, seedy, energetic, and expressive. If a manly guy like myself can enjoy an Archie book then anybody can.
Verdict: STRONG BUY

Marvel Comics
AVENGERS AI #6 $2.99
(W) Sam Humphries (A) Valerio Schiti (CA) David Marquez
This is and continues to be an interesting book. Unfortunately it still doesn’t live up to the hype that from the previous issue. The art seemed to be even better than the last issue for a multitude of reasons. For one I feel like an artist has finally made a strong distinction between Maria Hill and Monica Chang. It helps that they’re also written differently as well. Second there’s an awesome fight between Vision and Demetrios thats both comedic and epicly wicked cool. It started out kind of weird with SHIELD taking out some random old man LMD. Hank Pym continues to be wrecked and distraught by Victor Mancha’s death and his bipolar disorder. It was nice to see him find out that Victor is actually alive so now maybe he can get his crap together and get focused again. The best part of the book was probably when Vision had this epic fight with Demetrios on this other plane of existence that allowed them to change and transform into different being and creatures. At one point in the fight it goes from chibi characters to a fighting game style look. It was all over the place. It was great. This may not be one of the strongest books Marvel is putting out but it’s definitely fun and interesting every time I read it. Like I said though it doesn’t live up to the hype and I say this because the identity of Demetrios has been teased for a few issues now and in this one it’s finally revealed at the end yet I really had no idea who it was. Maybe that’s partially my fault but it wasn’t really explained at all. I suppose I will have to read the next issue to find out.
Verdict: weak BUY
SECRET AVENGERS #11 INF $3.99
(W) Ed Brisson (A) Luke Ross (CA) Nic Klein
This continues and as far as I know or can tell concluded the story of SHIELD Agent Sarah Garza. She is a tech support person that turned out to be an Inhuman. She helped Coulson and Fury against Thanos' invasion. In this issue they have to deal with somebody that was transformed by the Terrigen bomb Black Bolt released. Garza really has trouble with the idea of taking lives, especially people like her. Maria Hill was a total bitch. She was just really demanding, pointing out problems, and providing no solutions. Fury, Coulson, and Rhodey were like clock work in the field. Fury was cold and calculating. The art was some of the best I've seen on this title. It worked well with the street level battle scene and SHIELD settings. The faces, expressions, shading, and colors were some of the most impressive aspects of the book. The issue was a little confusing at first you're caught up to speed really quickly . There's good character moments and it's a solid issue as a one-shot, tie-in, or series title.
Verdict: weak BUY
Vertigo
VERTIGO ESSENTIALS FABLES #1 $1
(W) Bill Willingham (A) Lan Medina, Steve Leialoha (CA) James Jean
Many of the shows on television are slightly or roughly based off of this popular and fairly long running title. Shows like Sleepy Hollow or Once Upon A Time in which involve Fable characters and stories or are in modern times are quite similar. A lot of characters are introduced in this #1 reprint but no reason as to why you should care about any of them yet. There's definitely some interesting characters and concepts in this book. The premise is that there's these Fable characters like Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, and Jack from The Beanstalk just to name a few that live in a their own little community in New York City. The only plot point that is brought up is that there may be a murder amongst them. The colors are a little too bright for how dark it could be story wise. Besides that minor complaint the art is really impressive, realistic, and awe-inspiring. As a number one issue I'm not hooked but I have no doubt it's at least a good read in trade because it's only $1 though I have to say its worth the money.
Verdict: BUY
