Chronicle Review

Ok, so if you couldn't tell Chronicle is a "found footage" movie where three teenage students get powers. Essentially the whole movie can be explained through the trailers. The story is that an abused, bullied, anti-social kid that films everything gets powers, and goes bad. Personally I don't care for the "found footage" genre but it was the best I've ever seen and gets better after a certain point in the film. The plot is generic and predictable yet leave certain small plot holes unexplained. Chronicle's greatest strength is how realistic it is through the characters motivations and therefore actions. Because how realistic it is it also hurts it due to the certain unexplained points in the movie that could have been quite easy to do so. Some of the CGI just looked downright awful but most of the special effects looked good especially at the end. If anything good came out of this movie it was that it gave me hope in seeing a live action Akira or DBZ movie could be done. I went into this movie with an open mind, high hopes, and low expectations. It was better than expected and worse than I had hoped. Chronicle is mediocre at best. I'm going to have to suggest this movie as a PASS.

Animated Premieres

AVATAR: The Legend of Korra
For those of you that may not know this is the follow up to AVATAR: The Last Airbender. If you have not seen it it was a great show so check it out on Netflix. This new era of AVATAR takes place after Aang, the last airbenders, death. There is a new Avatar, Korra. She is a feisty, stubborn, strong willed teenage girl. She has been training her whole life as the new Avatar having learned all of the "bending" or powers except air bending. That's where her own journey begins. She goes to Capitol City to learn air bending from Aangs adult son. Capitol City is far from what she is use to. It is a big industrialized city. This show is much like AVATAR: The Last Airbender in that there is deep character moments and growth. The graphics look improved yet very similar as well as the voice work. This is a MUST SEE whether your an AVATAR fan or not.
THUNDERCATS
Thundercats is now going on to it's second season. It has been a great show so far and is now continuing that greatness into a second season. From the beginning this show has been about the thundercats and their journey to greatness. It seems to be somewhat of a prequel to the original. They are all younger, learning how to be great leaders, fighters, strategists, and soldiers. It's almost as if each episode is a life lesson that some or all of the characters need to learn. What's great about this new season is you can finally see each character staring to become the great awesome team known as the THUNDERCATS. Liking the old THUNDERCATS but not being a big fan I now find myself yelling Thundercats HO and wanting a THUNDERCATS shirt. In other words this is a MUST SEE but you should check it out from the first season.

DC NATION
Green Lantern
The premiere was a while back but only recently have they been putting out new episodes. The premiere itself was a very intense powerful episode wrought with heart, battle, space-travel, and death. I was impressed with the voice work, strong characters, and intense story. The only thing that irks me and continues to do so is the cheesy 3D animation. Not only do I not like the look, it just doesn't seem to fit the serious tone of this show. Though it feels like you need to know about Green Lanterns to understand what's going on you really don't. Every week I find more out about the lanterns and each character. This may not be the best show out there but it's definitely the best Green Lantern, Hal Jordan material I've had experience with and a MUST SEE.
Young Justice
Now in its 3rd volume this premiere started exactly where the last episode took off and at the same time was kind of a return to the first premiere. Whereas I have always thought that DC shows, movies, and comics are more action driven than character driven this show proves me wrong. The best thing about this show is the characters, their development, growth, depth, and how this fuels the show each episode. Personally I believe this is the greatest DC show ever made. It's turned a bunch of sidekicks and nobodies that not only did I not care for but most of I disliked and now I respect them all at the least. Aqualad and Superboy are now two of my favorite DC characters just because of this show because of how they are depicted in this show. If that's not saying enough then I'll just come out and say it, this is a MUST SEE. It's better to experience from the beginning though.

MARVEL UNIVERSE
Ultimate Spider-Man
I have to be honest when I say that I was not that impressed with this premiere. Something to keep in mind and know about this show is that it is about Ultimate Marvel Spider-Man not regular/original Marvel Spider-Man. That being said this Peter Parker is a little bit different. He comes off more like Deadpool most of the time mixed in with a little Scott Pilgrim as does the whole show. By the end of the episode this show was seeming to turn out like X-Men Evolution as well by adding a whole group of other teenaged superheroes. The show has gotten better with the second episode but still has all of the same elements. So for hardcore Spidey fans especially Ultimate Spider-Man fans and kids this show is a MUST SEE.
Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes
Not only is this my favorite comic and cartoon show it's also one of my top favorite shows of all time. From episode one to now this show has been the greatest fusion of past, present, Marvel history, canon, and characters ever made. This show is so rich with spot on characterization, strong dialogue, deep story threads, and plots. The premiere was no exception jumping right into the action and starting exactly where they left off now in the 2nd season. This show is animated gold whether you're into comics or not. I can not recommend this show enough. It's a MUST SEE for all, BUY for me, and you can check out the last season on Netflix.

Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance Review

Ok so Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance is now in the dollar theatre and that's why I finally went to go see it. That was a waste of time, money, and a huge mistake. This is easily the worst comic book movie ever made and is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. By the first two minutes I knew this movie was going to be crap due to the shoddy camera work, cheesy lines, confusing plot that had no explanation until later in the movie. I can get over the fact that this doesn't follow the source material as most movies don't but I could not get over how they completely obliterated the Ghost Rider mythos and character by making up their own garbage back story for him. They tried to tell this retelling of his origin and other parts through horrible dark motion comic book segments. Because this isn't a sequel what they tried to do was a "do-over" but it was just confusing since they used the greatest over-actor of all time, Nicholas Cage. Nicholas Cage was a bad choice in the last film so it wasn't any different this time but he felt more fitting in this second rate b-movie even though it was trying to be a big hitter. I don't know if Nicholas Cage purposely does these movies that require him to over-act or if people cast him just so they can get him to over-act but either way that's exactly what he does in this movie and it's hilarious but not because it's good or supposed to be but because it's godawful like the rest of this movie. The only semi-good thing about this was that Ghost Riders powers were a lot more hardcore. The plot was about a kid who is the Antichrist and the devil is trying to take over his body so Ghost Rider has to stop him. I could go on and on about why this movie is crap but I think that instead of rambling on and on I'll just tell you that the cinematography, acting, plot, story, direction was all garbage. So if you don't get what I'm saying I'll just come out and say it, its a big effin pile of PASS. Don't bother wasting your time or money.

Avengers vs X-Men Event Party & AvX Round 1 Release

On Tuesday April 3rd Kaboom had a Avengers vs X-Men Event party for the release of Avengers vs X-Men Round 1 from 5-8PM. When I found out about this a few days before and I had heard that I could get a free graphic novel, free AvX comic, and be able to get AvX Round 1 a day early I was totally there. Only two stores in the city were doing the 8PM Avengers vs X-Men #1 Release Party and Kaboom was one of them. The other store was Astro Zombies representing the X-Men and Kaboom representing the Avengers.

As always Kaboom was packed from 5-8 with people talking about comic, movies, shows, and playing games. At 8PM we all lined up to get our free raffle ticket to possibly win 1 of 4 different variant cover issues of AvX Round 1 that Marvel had sent Gene for having this shindig. He also received pins, posters, and cards that he gave to everyone that showed up to the event party. After raffling off the four different variants which I had won one of(blank variant) we all lined up once again to get our back and bagged issue of AvX Round 1 and free Secret Invasion Mighty Avengers trade paperback. Getting all this free stuff and having great, fun, interesting convo's was the best part for me until I read Avengers vs X-Men Round 1.
Written by Bryan Michael Bendis or BMB as I call him and draw by John Romita Jr I have not have been more impressed by a first issue event book. Despite not being a fan of John Romita Jr's art I was pleasantly surprised. BMB really gave every single character their own voice from page one and through out this book . The pacing is impeccably well done. The colors, textures, and expressions are superb. The Avengers and X-Men have made their first move. Now go make yours and BUY this issue before it sells out. You won't regret it.
