Dec 4 Comic Week in Review

Every week Pablo Gunner uses the little intelligence he has to muster up some written comic book reviews of the titles that he thinks his fellow nerds would want to know about most and the books that didn’t quite make it onto the Comicast. Check out these reviews of Deadpool #20, Earth 2 #18, TERMINATOR SALVATION FINAL BATTLE #1.

Dark Horse Comics
TERMINATOR SALVATION FINAL BATTLE #1 (OF 12) $3.99
(W) J. Michael Straczynski (A) Pete Woods (CA) Pete Woods, Matthew Wilson
I love the Terminator franchise so this automatically caught my eye but I had no intentions of actually reading it until I saw who the writer was, JMS, who is known for his run on Amazing Spider-Man and script for Changeling amongst countless other works. If you can't tell by the title this book takes place after the Terminator Salvation film. It may not have been a popular film but I enjoyed it and I've been wanting to see the future even if it is just them showing what we know has to happen. For me it's all about the journey. It's not the destination but how and what it takes to get there. As per the usual some "people" from the future show up in the past, one guy on his own and then two males and a female together. What's great about this book is that you see the past, future, where they meet, and characters that are in both. There's the inception of the Terminators, the lady who creates them, and John Connor after the events of the Salvation movie. The art was really impressive too. It was pretty realistic and close to the movies but had its own look to make it unique and a little different. I liked it. It was good but this is just the beginning and it was just enough to pique my interest for another issue. The writing was good, story was interesting, art was impressive so whether you're a Terminator fan or not it's worth checking out.
Verdict: BUY

DC Comics
Earth 2 #18 $2.99

I haven’t read this title in a while so it was interesting to read and review this. Right away I knew that it wasn't going to be a good jumping on point since it was part 2 of a story arc and that feeling just became stronger as I read on. First off there's a new, evil Superman who serves Lord Darkseid as he refers to him. There's also another Batman which I have no idea who he is or what he's about. Superman happens to be effing stuff up when the Flash who is still wearing the dumbest costume(it's mostly the helmet) decides to distract him. Meanwhile Batman is at some cryogenic warehouse full of "people". He releases one of them and kills another. It was really confusing. I didn't really understand any bodies motivations for doing what they did or why they were there in the first place. The art is still impressive and well done but I was lost, confused, and disinterested. If you've been reading this I'm sure it's a solid issue but it's not a good jumping on point or for people that haven't been reading the whole time.
Verdict: SKIM

Marvel Comics
Deadpool #20 $2.99
(W) Gerry Duggan, Brian Posehn (A) Scott Koblish (CA) Tom Scioli
I'm not sure if the issues in the last arc or these flashback/retro issues are better. These issues do such a superb job of emulating the decade they're suppose to be from but also the era of comics they are drawn and written. They make fun of the time period and the comic book tropes and styles of the genre. This one took place in what I believe is the 80s. It’s all bright colors and weird costumes with odd, abstract patterns. The same things that are good and bad about the period it takes place are in here but it’s all part of the joke and that’s what makes it such a smart, fresh, and funny book. It's cheesy and fun but the writers know it and poke fun at it for what it is. So in this issue Deadpool shows up and takes a vacay in Wakanda. For whatever reason he has to collect these cosmic puzzle pieces before some evil doers beat him to the punch so he can be the savior of the cosmos. It was goofy but clean, good fun and I absolutely loved the art. This title continues to be one of the best books of Marvel NOW! even if you're not a big DP fan, like myself.
Verdict: STRONG BUY
