Superman For Tomorrow Trade Review

Man of Steel was just released on DVD/Blu-Ray on November 12 so we thought it would be a good time to review a Superman trade.

Unlike the movie this book is not about Superman's origins or even one of his first outings as Supes but rather a veteran Man of Steel that has seen and experienced much. In this he experiences something new, something he doesn't know how to deal with. In this regard this book is contemplative. A cataclysmic event took place while Superman was away from Earth. Not only does he feel responsible but he also sees how it has changed the people and their perception of him. He sees humanity at their worst. Losing faith in himself and humanity he seeks solace in a priest. It's interesting because upon his return from space people practically treat Superman like they barely remember him, his feats, and how he use to be. At one point he becomes at odds with the Justice League, some members more than others which also creates an intriguing dynamic.
This is one of the few Superman books I have ever read than I can say felt like a smart read. Brian Azzarello writes in such a way that constantly keeps you thinking. I don't think I've ever read anything that has had you so deeply ingrained into the characters head. It's almost like playing a first person shooter where the character has lines and sometimes you see in cinematic action sequences. Speaking of cinematic action sequences, Jim Lee knocks them all out of the park. It's obvious that Jim Lee is one of those artists that's so good at story telling that the writer never has to work hard conveying what the art should. These two may be an odd pairing considering their styles but somehow they gel exquisitely well. Seeing Jim Lee's art really is like watching seasoned actors perform with each little subtle nuance, gesture, posture, and expression of each character.
Don't be fooled though because this book isn't all contemplative, thought provoking material. There's plenty of eye candy(Wonder Woman & Lois), classic Superman heroics, baddie bashing, and battle against old foes. This is one of the most unique and fresh takes on a modern Superman. If you're jonesing for a good, smart, gorgeous Superman book this is the perfect book for you especially since Action Comics and Superman of the NEW 52 have been pretty weak thus far.
Verdict: BUY
